When Applications Go Exascale — The CRESTA Project

balance

Seymour Cray, the pioneer of supercomputing, famously asked if you would rather plough a field with two strong oxen or 1024 chickens. The question has since been answered for us: power restrictions have driven CPU manufacturers away from "oxen" (powerful single-core devices) towards multi- and many-core "chickens." An exascale supercomputer will take this a leap further, connecting tens of thousands of many-core nodes, leaving application programmers with the challenge of efficiently harnessing the computing power of tens of millions of threads. This challenge is not just for the applications themselves, but everything underneath — from the operating and runtime systems, through the communication and scientific libraries to the … [Read more...]

Cray Supercomputers Powering Scientific Research in Chemistry and Life Sciences

ISMB_Life Sciences Event

In recent months, several chemistry and life sciences organizations have turned to Cray supercomputers to power their scientific research. Among them we welcome Duke University, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Université Laval in Canada, S.N. Bose in India, and the PDC Center for High-Performance Computing at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, as well as a number of leading pharmaceutical companies and biotechs. These organizations are doing groundbreaking work, and providing them with Cray supercomputers is representative of our growing presence in this vitally important segment. Chemistry and life sciences researchers are certainly no strangers to HPC. In fact, as part of the 2013 HPCwire … [Read more...]

Another Exciting Year

Pete's Blog_holiday 2013

As we near the end of 2013, Cray is closing out one of the most transformative years in our long and proud history. In just this year alone, we successfully integrated two strategic acquisitions, won a number of large supercomputing contracts at customer sites around the world, significantly expanded our business and portfolio of solutions, continued to build the financial strength of the company, and added a host of highly-talented individuals to our team. It’s been quite a year! Since the early days of our company, starting with our iconic founder Seymour Cray, we have been a trusted partner to customers around the world with a commitment to do two things really well:  be focused on their success and help them to see around the next … [Read more...]

Supercomputing Creates Innovation Under the Hood

HLRS

German love for the engineering industries is renowned, so it isn't surprising that one of the biggest HPC systems in Europe is used to make innovations through technology a reality. The automotive sector, like many other research-centric industries, faces major challenges when it comes to taking new ideas and having them impact real-world products. The process of experimentation and trial needed to make new ideas a reality is long and expensive, both issues that supercomputing solutions are helping to address. For a clear example of this trend, look no further than the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) of the University of Stuttgart. HLRS is among the leading supercomputing centers in Europe and has strong links to the … [Read more...]

Cray’s Past Instrumental in Guiding its Future

Cray-1

This past weekend, we used the occasion of Mr. Seymour Cray’s birthday to pay tribute to the visionary who started it all and is affectionately known as the “Father of Supercomputing.”  With a childhood interest in electronics and electrical devices, he began an early quest to create some of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, and there is no doubt he has shaped and influenced today’s HPC industry. As a company, Cray was among the early information technology giants to emerge in the United States and has long striven to provide leadership in the sector. History often shapes the present and guides the future, and this is evident in Cray's direction. Our longstanding place in the HPC sector has given us the experience and … [Read more...]
